Top 10 Smartphones of the Last 12 Months

During the year 2012, the smartphone industry took some serious strides and a lot of big changes were made. Ten years ago from today, people were happy to pay $40 to $50 for a phone that just made phone calls and sent text messages. These days, with the advancements made in the technology sector, people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for touch screen phones that pack as much horsepower under the hood as the latest computers of a couple of years ago. Below, we are giving short reviews of the 10 best smart phones of the past year.

10. Sony Xperia Z

The Sony Xperia Z was one of the most awaited devices with plenty of rumours and unconfirmed leaks prior to its release. It has a full HD display resolution and the design itself is magnificent. The best thing of all is that it is waterproof. This means that you can submerge this phone a foot under water and it would still work. With more than sufficient RAM and a quad-core CPU, you really couldn’t ask for more, apart from a lighter price tag.

9. Samsung Galaxy S3

The flagship device by Samsung was released as an answer to Apple’s iPhone. The battery life is amazing, the display quite clear and bright, and the camera is capable of shooting full HD videos. Just like most of the high end phones, this one carries a big price tag and you should prepare to pay a few hundred dollars to own this beauty.

8. HTC Butterfly

This is the first smartphone with a full HD resolution to hit the shelves. With a pixel density of more than 400 dots per inch, you will get immensely crisp images and video. For comparison, most of the 720p resolution phones have a pixel density of around 250 dots per inch.

7. HTC One V

This one is for the people who have a limited budget. The One V has an attractive design and a camera capable of shooting 720p videos. There is a chin at the bottom of the phone which has no real purpose other than making the unit look like a cell phone.

6. Acer Liquid C1

This smartphone released by the electronics giant Acer uses the Intel Atom processor. It was unveiled at an event in the beginning of 2013. The design and the exterior is pretty good considering its price. You get 21 Mbps 3G on this phone, but no 4G. With Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, you get a whole host of features on this phone, something that the average smartphone user will find quite useful.

5.  HTC One X +

This phone was released six months after HTC One X and some much needed improvements were made over its predecessors. The display resolution stayed the same at 1280*720 pixels and the 1 GB of RAM was also deemed sufficient enough. However, the processor in the One X+ was boosted to 1.7 GHz quad-core Tegra 3. This, according to an official statement from HTC, has made the One X+ 67% faster than the One X.

4. Motorola RAZR M

Motorola has been active all year round releasing state-of-the-art cell phones regularly. After releasing RAZR Maxx and RAZR HD, a mini version in the series was released. RAZR M, known in the US as Droid RAZR M, has a comparatively smaller display resolution of 960*540 pixels. However the design, dimensions and the edge-to-edge display more than makes up for that.

Nokia Lumia

3.  Nokia Lumia 920

The smartphone market has been dominated by phones that run Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. However, Microsoft has been trying to get into the game lately by releasing its latest mobile operating system known as Windows Phone 8. The Nokia Lumia 920 is arguably the most popular Windows Phone on the market. The 920 has a 720p resolution, which has been the standard during the year 2012. The RAM stacks up to 1 GB and the dual-core processor is clocked at 1.5 GHz.

2. HTC 8X

Another phone that is a worthy competitor of phones running Android and iOS, the 8X by HTC, which also uses Windows Phone 8 as the operating system, has a display resolution of 1280*720. Most of the other specifications are similar to those of the Lumia 920. However, the battery timing has been reported by some users as not adequate.

iPhone 5

1. iPhone 5

No list of smartphones is complete without an edition of the iPhone series. In this particular list, it is the iPhone 5 which sports a much more stylish and sleek design than its predecessor. Some people might argue that the latest edition failed to live up to its hype and build up which was seen prior to its release. With predictably high prices, you can get the 16, 32 and 64 GB versions of the iPhone 5. The resolution on the 4 inch screen is 1366*640. There is even a flash to go along with the 8 megapixel camera at the back of the unit. The front camera is 1.2 megapixel and comes in handy to make Skype video calls while on the move.
