Language is the most important element for communication and acts as a tool to interact among individuals. It allows us many hours of entertainment through literature,radio,music and films.Today there are around 4,000-5,000 languages are spoken in the world.In India only around 23 different languages are spoken in different regions.Language acts as the system of symbolic communication. Language is traditionally seen as consisting of three parts: signs, meanings and a code which inter relates.The list below summarizes the most important languages in use today.

10.French:

French is spoken in tons of countries, including Belgium, Canada, Rwanda, Cameroon, and Haiti. Oh, and France too.It is often called the most romantic language in the world. We’re actually very lucky that French is so popular, because without it, we might have been stuck with Dutch Toast, Dutch Kissing.French is the fourth-most widely spoken mother tongue in the European Union.The population of its speakers include 129 million.

9.Malay-Indonesian:

Malay-Indonesian is spoken in Malaysia and Indonesia.Its strength of speakers include 159 million.There are many dialects of Malay the most important being the Indonesian.Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia.It is standardized register of Malay.The Malay language was originated in Sumatra.

  8.Portuguese:

Portugal after its independence from Spain in the 12th century expanded all over the world.Portugal explorers played an important hand in expansion of the language the most famous being Vasco da Gama and Prince Henry the Navigator.Portugal got in so early in exploring the world, the language established itself all over the world, especially in Brazil, Macau, Angola, Venezuela, and Mozambique.The no. of Speakers of this language are around 191 million.

 

7.Bengali:

Bangladesh is a country of population of about 120+ million.Bengali is the national language of Bangladesh and here almost everyone speaks Bengali.As the Bangladesh is surrounded by the Indian states like West Bengal,Tripura,Assam ,many of its speakers reside in these areas..  Speakers also live in Europe, the United States, and even Saudi Arabia.The Bengali speakers are much higher than expected around the world about 211 million.

 

6.Arabic:

Arabic is one of the world’s oldest languages.It is spoken in the Middle East and other countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Egypt with total strength of 246 million.Millions of Moslems in other countries speak Arabic as well.In 1974 it was made the sixth official language of the United Nations.

 

5.Russian:

It is one of the six languages in the UN. Apart from the Mother Country it is also spoken in Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the U.S. with a total strength of 277 million speakers.It is the largest native language in Europe.

 

4.Spanish:

Spanish is the official language of Spain and is spoken in just about every South American and Central American country along with Cuba and the U.S. with total strength of 392 million speakers. There is a particular interest in Spanish in the U.S. Spanish is one of the most widely distributed languages in the world. It is the official language of nearly every state in Latin America.It is also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

 

3. Hindi-Urdu:

It is a language with two official forms i.e. Standard Hindi and Standard Urdu.The two forms are nearly indistinguishable from each other.  Hindi is the official language of India while Urdu is the official language of Pakistan.Urdu and Hindi are also spoken in parts of Europe and North America with heavy Indian and Pakistani immigrant populations.It has engulfed large no. of speakers with total strength of 497 million.

Its speakers hail from all around the world.It is the official language of 53 countries including New Zealand, the U.S., Australia, England, Zimbabwe, the Caribbean, Hong Kong, South Africa, and Canada with total population of 508 million.English is also an official language of several organizations like the UN, NATO, and the European Union.

Mandarin is often called Chinese but it is in fact only one of many Chinese languages, which include Cantonese and Xiang.Mandarin is the largest of the Chinese language.It is the official language of the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan.It is also one of four official languages of Singapore.Mandarin has two writing systems; Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese.The population of speakers of this language has passed 1billion mark.
