Everybody loves Mickey Mouse but does everyone know that much about him? Here are top 10 facts that we might not know about Mickey.

10. Mickey Mouse has only four fingers.

Mickey Mouse has only three fingers and a thumb. Disney pointed out that this is for both artistic and financial reasons. If Mickey Mouse had five fingers, his hand would look awkward as it would appear like a bunch of bananas. Financially, Mickey Mouse’s four fingers saved Disney a whole lot of money. By not drawing a fifth finger on each one of the 45,000 illustrations that comprise a 6 ½-minute short film, Disney was able to save millions of dollars.

9. Mickey was originally named Mortimer Mouse.

Mickey would have been named Mortimer but Walt Disney’s wife Lilian thought that Mickey was more pompous. Mortimer was, however, used for a new character to rival Mickey. Mortimer Mouse had only one appearance in “Mickey’s Rival,” and was never seen again until the latter part of the 90’s and early 2000s when his popularity was at a high.

8. Mickey and Minnie Mouse became real-life partners.

Wayne Allwine and Russi Taylor were the voices behind Mickey and Minnie Mouse. After Walt Disney himself, Wayne took over as the voice of Mickey until his death in 2009. On the other hand, Russi Taylor is the voice of Minnie Mouse in 1986 up to the present, which makes it the longest stint for Minnie Mouse. In 1991, the two got married and were never separated until Wayne’s death four years ago.

7.  In 1935, Mickey Mouse was banned in Romania because many thought he was scaring young children.

The Romanian government thought that a 10-foot mouse would be a scary thought for children. That was long ago since Mickey is now appearing in the Romanian Disney Channel.

6. Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny had only one movie together.

Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny in the big screen together? This happened in 1988 for only half a minute via the movie “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” This collaboration was through the efforts of director and producer Steven Spielberg. But to do that, Warner Bros. had to demand equal number of dialogues and that Bugs would have scenes opposite Mickey Mouse.

Since debuting in 1928, Mickey Mouse was contracted to appear in various Disney merchandises. The first Mickey merchandise was a school tablet featuring his image. In 1933, the first Mickey Mouse watches came out in the market. They are still being sold to this very day.

Mickey’s debut film was “Plane Crazy”. The movie was secretly made by Walt and Lilian Disney and UbiIwerks in a garage behind the home of the Disneys in Lyric Avenue. His first colored cartoon film was “The Band Concert” in 1935. The first two Mickey movies were worth $2,500 to produce.

The world was introduced to Mickey Mouse on November 18, 1928. This year, he will be turning 85 years old.

2. Mickey Mouse was a replacement for Oswald the Rabbit

Mickey Mouse was a substitute for Oswald the Rabbit, which Disney created for Universal Studios. However, with Mickey Mouse becoming successful, Charles Mintz of Universal asked Disney to decrease his budget and that he wouldbe given the rights to Mickey Mouse. Disney rejected the offer and went on to create his own studio.

1. There are 376 hidden Mickeys at Disney Land

Hidden Mickeys were a product of internal jokes within the circle of Disney imagineers. An image of Mickey Mouse was hidden in the design of Disney attractions such as a ride or resort.
