Kolkata or its traditional name Calcutta is the capital of West Bengal of India which is derived from Bengali word Kolkata one of the name of village during the arrival of British. During 2000’s it is recorded as third most populous metropolitan area with accelerated growth in economics. Since independence it has been the centre of culture, science, education and considered the hotbed state politics. 10. Birla Industrial and Technological Museum

This is the first science museum in India opened in the year 1954 by industrialist Ghanshyam Das Birla as a unit under National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, and Government of India in Kolkata. This museum is divided into various galleries depicting industries and business enterprises of Birla’s. Each gallery has its specialization such as there is Mathematics gallery, Biotechnology, Electricity, Television showcasing different and upcoming techniques. This museum just showcasing has started various live programmers to give knowledge on the other hand entertain visitors.

9. Belurmath Shrine

This shrine is considered to be one of the sacred pilgrimage place being the headquarters of Shri Ramakrishna Mission. This shrine is known by the mission as foremost disciple Swami Vivekananda spend his last days in this shrine. His words Belur Math from his mouth means a lot and is a symbol of devotion, Knowledge, Yoga and work. Swami Vivekananda consecrated the grounds in 1898 and since then it has been the hub of worldwide spiritual movement known as Ramakrishna Movement. This museum is totally devoted to swami Vivekananda as his mahasamadhi is there on the other hand this temple also have museum containing articles of the mission.

It is first centre of charity organization started in 1950 by Mother Teresa under Missionaries of Charity. Nirmal Hirday symbolizes pure heart as it is the organization which helps anyone thus known as home for dying destitute. This organization is one of the worlds famous as it has been known for helping the needy free of cost. This organization has opened various other hospitals and charities for poor or which are financially weak thus started free of cost mission handled by nuns this is also known as Mother House.

7. St. Paul’s Cathedral

This is the Anglican Cathedral church of North India and also a part of united church. This church belongs to Anglican Communion initiated in 1839 by Bishop Daniel Wilson and later on completed in 1847. Formerly it is beautifully architecture and secondly it is situated at such a place that it become island of attractions besides Victoria Memorial and Birla Planetarium. The first bishop of this church was T F Middleton which has its burial in the church itself.

6. Victoria Memorial Hall

It is an autonomous organization dedicated to queen Victoria, Empress of India established in the year 1921. The foundation stone was laid in the year 1906 as a tribute to the British Empire in India. Sir William Emerson architect this memorial using white makrana marble keeping in mind British and Mughal culture which is spread to area by 338ft to 228ft and its height was 184ft. This memorial was considered to be great and famous among Britishers but after independence India did various alterations and today it is known as tourist place and contain museum also. This memorial now consists of royal gallery containing some major collections of paintings, sculptures, manuscripts of British period declaring this memorial largest repository in India.

5. Howrah Bridge

Originally this name was commissioned as New Howrah Bridge in the year 1943. It is a suspension type balanced cantilever bridge that spans the Hooghly River in West Bengal later in 1965 this bridge was again named as Rabindra Setu after great Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore. Bridge has become an iconic landmark and symbol of Kolkata, during its construction it was third longest cantilever bridge and currently the sixth longest bridge in the world. The total length of bridge is 705m with a width of 17m. This Howrah Bridge is one of the famous attractions of Kolkata and world famous.

4. Marble Palace

This is the traditional mansion built in 1835 by wealthy Bengali merchant, Raja Rajendra Mullick who is famous for art and have critical eye. It is a palatial nineteenth century mansion in North Kolkata famous for its marble walls and floors from where its name is derived. This house contain wide number of western sculpture and Victorian furniture and is basically neoclassical in style on the other hand this three storey building contain a garden lawns, rock garden, a lake and a small zoo. This house remains a private pavilion.

3. Kalighat

This temple is one of the most famous temples of goddess Kali. During 16th century in the year 1809 this temple was built by King Manasingha since then this temple has great importance in the world as people from all over the world offer their prayers to lord shiv and kali. There is a story related to this temple of the lord Shiva and his wife sati as it is also believed that one of the finger of left hand fell in the several places.

Botanical garden is a relevant name given to this well tended area which display different variety of plants having scientific and medicinal value as these plants are labeled with their botanical names which help visitors to know about plants and their importance. These gardens are not privately owned or handled rather they are properly looked after by universities and scientific research organizations incorporated with research programmes in plant taxonomy and botanical science. Their main job is to maintain a report of collections of these plants from their sowing till their full growth and giving knowledge and doing research on every plant and classifying them on the basis of their type. First botanical garden was made in Oman which is recorded to be first largest garden in the world. Botanical gardens have different variety of plant such as exotic, tropical, alpine etc.

Eden Garden is one of the best cricket ground which have been acknowledged as iconic cricket stadium in India and called as ‘’Cricket answer’s to the colosseum’’ This stadium is the home ground for Bengal cricket team and IPL Knight Riders on the other hand venue for test matches, one day international and T-20 matches. 2011 world cup was played on this ground and during world cup only this ground underwent changes to meet the standards of ICC as it has been considered largest cricket stadium in India and second largest in world for seating arrangement.
