People start taking it just for fun and because of peer pressure, but before they know it, they find it hard to live without it. They need to take a hit at regular intervals and try to get money from whatever means necessary. People take advantage on this negative attribute of drugs and transform it into a business, operating in the underworld. Below is a list of the most notorious drug kingpins ever to walk the Earth.

He operated in the United States and was arrested in 1975 when his house was raided. More than $500,000 were recovered at the scene and the man was sentenced to 70 years in prison after being convicted for over 100 drug-related charges.

9. Christopher Coke aka Dudus

Dudus was based in Jamaica, one of the go-to destinations for drug addicts, and was caught at a roadblock while dressed in women’s clothes. He surrendered to police without putting up a fight.

8. Griselda Blanco aka The Cocaine Godmother

She was known to be extremely violent in her methods and was known for many cold-blooded assassinations. She is thought to have been responsible for more than 200 murders including that of a 2-year-old child. She was eventually herself assassinated by a rival group.

The 1980s was a time when the drug-dealing business was at its peak in Los Angeles. This was the time when Freeway operated and was successfully captured by the DEA after being caught selling 100 kilos of coke to an undercover officer. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.

The gang Leyva was a part of was thought to be responsible for numerous torture, kidnapping and human smuggling cases. He survived an assassination attempt in 2009 but was killed a week later by Mexico’s Navy intelligence.

Fuentes was killed accidentally by surgeons while he was undergoing major appearance changes. The gang he was a part of thought this was a deliberate attempt to kill him and the surgeons were later found stuffed into oil drums.

Escobar was known across Colombia as a homegrown Narco-terrorist and drug lord. He was reported by Forbes in 1989 as the seventh richest man in the world. He was shot and killed by police while attempting to avoid capture.

Loera has been declared by the DEA as the biggest drug lord of all time. The worst thing, however, is that he is still alive and operating today.
